TOUR ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Steamboat Springs

Seat Time: 4 - 4.5 hours

Our adventure begins in Steamboat Springs, CO: a beautiful mountain ski destination with a charming downtown and the world-famous Strawberry Park Hot Springs. We will meet the afternoon before our departure (7/20) at the Mariposa Lodge Bed and Breakfast. There we will get acquainted with the members of the group, guides, and chase vehicle driver. We will handle all rental forms, safety literature, and hand-outs before heading out to a nice dinner in town. Rest up because tomorrow we start the most epic ride in Colorado!

* If you are renting a bike for the 7-Day BDR tour, we will have it ready for you (along with any additional accessories like GPS, panniers, or helmets) at the bed and Breakfast in Steamboat Springs.

* Shuttle services are available – Please let us know in advance if you will need a ride from the Denver Airport to Steamboat.

DAY TWO

Steamboat Springs → Eagle

4 hours - 121 miles

The first day of our southbound adventure takes us through lush country along a mellow mix of dirt roads with a few winding paved segments. We will encounter a couple creek crossings and an abandoned historic stage stop, along with epic views of the Colorado River and Stagecoach Reservoir. A relaxing picnic lunch will be provided by our support vehicle alongside the Colorado river. We’ll reach our hotel in Eagle with time to sit down for a great dinner at the Real Jalisco restaurant next door.

DAY THREE

Eagle → Buena Vista

Seat Time: 4 - 4.5 hours

Today, the terrain varies from winding pavement to rocky roads and sandy two-track. Our ride takes you through the White River National Forest, over three mountain passes all featuring stunning views of alpine lakes.

After leaving Leadville, more spectacular views will greet us on unpaved Weston Pass (11,921 ft.) before we descend into the South Park, and then into Fourmile Recreation Area. Smooth and sandy trails (and a couple water crossings) will bring us to our destination of Buena Vista and our charming downtown hotel.

DAY FOUR

Buena Vista → Lake City

4 hours - 145 miles

We will have the opportunity to stop by our Accelerate Adventures shop while in Buena Vista for any needed supplies or repairs. After a tasty breakfast, we will head up the scenic and twisting paved Cottonwood Pass (12,126 ft.) where we will once again cross the Continental Divide. After arriving in Taylor Park, the route turns quickly to dirt, visiting the remote towns of Tincup and Pitkin (where we will stop for a relaxing lunch), and summiting Cumberland Pass (12,015 ft.). We continue south on un-paved roads over Los Pinos Pass (10,541 ft.) which was once a Ute Indian trail, and into our nightly destination of Lake City, CO. The North Face Lodge offers full kitchens, luxury rooms and great atmosphere as we unwind and take in the beautiful scenery.

DAY FIVE

Lake City → Telluride

Seat Time:  4.5 hours = – 64-81 miles

This is what we’ve been waiting for! Day 5 is packed with the best riding, scenery, and history that Colorado has to offer. Our ride today takes us by the pristine lake San Cristobal, and over a series of rugged mountain passes highly regarded as the most spectacular views in the Rockies. Stopping points include the untouched ruins of the Animas Forks mine and ghost town, and infamous Idarado Mine ruins. We will summit over Cinnamon Pass (12,640 ft.), California Pass (12,900 ft.), and Corkscrew Pass (12,244 ft.) before intersecting the paved highway which provides a route to lunch options in the towns of Ouray or Silverton (separated by the “Million Dollar Highway”).

After refueling, we will retreat into the backcountry over the switchbacks of Ophir Pass (11,789 ft.) and into our evening destination of Telluride, CO. We will be welcomed at the Camel’s Garden Hotel which sits at the base of the ski area and is within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and hiking trails. Hot tubs and a full-service spa can help you rejuvenate after your day’s ride, or rent a bicycle or paddle board downstairs and continue your exploration.

DAY SIX

Telluride → Dolores

2hrs – 64mi

Our last day on the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route will take us on a more relaxed ride on the paved San Juan Skyway road with more spectacular mountain scenery all around. We will follow the Dolores River to the town of Rico where we will stop for lunch. The riverside route will eventually deliver us to our destination of Dolores. We will be welcomed to a cozy motel and dining options nearby in this small mountain town.

DAY SEVEN

Dolores → Buena Vista +/- Denver

4.5 hours – 64-81 miles

Today we will reflect on our amazing experience through the Colorado Rockies as we make our way back to Buena Vista. We will pass the mountain towns of Mancos, Durango, Pagosa Springs, summit over Wolf Creek Pass, into South Fork, over Poncha Pass, and onto Buena Vista.
